棕剛玉以鋁土礦、無菸煤和鐵屑為原料，在電弧下經2000度以上高溫冶煉而成。採用自磨機破碎整形，磁選除鐵，篩分分成各種粒度。棕剛玉的主要化學成分為AL2O3，含量為94.5%～97%，還有少量Fe、Si、Ti等，質地緻密，硬度較高，顆粒呈球形。適用於陶瓷、樹脂高固結磨料的製造，以及研磨、拋光、噴砂、鑄造等，也可用於製造耐火材料。
